Hi, we’re Callie, Seymour, Yebba, and Mama — your favorite four-pack of chaotic feline energy and founders of Stray Cat News.

If you're a cat parent with more than one furry mouth to feed, you’ve probably experienced:

  • Screaming at 6:12 AM

  • Bowl swapping mid-meal

  • Food flying like confetti

  • Someone (Yebba) eating everyone else’s kibble

Feeding time in a multi-cat household is not for the faint of heart.

But don’t worry. We’ve cracked the code. After years of chaos (and passive-aggressive staring contests), we’ve finally created a feeding routine that actually works — and we’re sharing it right meow.

🍽️ Why Feeding Multiple Cats Is So Hard

Feeding four rescue cats isn’t just “putting down bowls.” It’s a strategy session.
Here’s why things get spicy fast:

  • 🐱 Different diets (Seymour has a sensitive stomach. Yebba does not.)

  • 🐱 Different speeds (Mama eats like a lady. Callie inhales food like a Dyson.)

  • 🐱 Territory wars (especially if you feed in one room, on the same level!)

  • 🐱 Kibble thieves (We see you, Yebba.)

If you don’t have a system, mealtime = meltdown. That’s why we created this guide.

Step 1: Identify Your Cats' Feeding Personalities

You can’t fix the chaos if you don’t know where it’s coming from. Here’s a breakdown of our styles:

  • Callie: “This is MY bowl. It better only have chicken in it. Pate. Friskies. Don’t even breathe near it.”

  • Seymour: “I’ll eat if someone holds emotional space for me. I also like variety!”

  • Yebba: “What’s mine is mine. What’s yours is also mine. Cat feeding perch? Also Mine.”

  • Mama: “I’m old. I want peace. My stomach is sensitive after so many years in the wild. My teeth are bad.”

Understanding their behavior helps us choose the right setup, placement, and timing—all of which we’ll cover below.

Step 2: Build a Cat Feeding Station That Works

Here’s where we turn your house into a feeding fortress (minus the chaos).

Our Top Pick for Elevated, Organized Feeding:

MeowHomm Cat Wall Shelves with Bowls 🍽️
This cat wall-mounted shelf system is genius for multi-cat households. It:

  • Separates food zones vertically

  • Prevents bowl swapping

  • Doubles as enrichment with climbing steps

  • Looks aesthetic enough for the ‘gram

We installed one feeding shelves — one in the living room (near the kitchen). It instantly reduced drama.

Bonus: Seymour feels safer eating off the ground, Where as Yebba loves eating as high up as possible. Anxiety = lowered. 💅

💸 Best on a Budget:

Kitty City Raised Stainless Steel Bowls (2pk)

If you’re feeding on flat surfaces, do your cats (and their necks) a favor with raised bowls. While I prefer to always recommend stainless steel, These bowls are:

  • Affordable (2 for less than $10)

  • Dishwasher safe

  • Slow feeding bowls to improve digestion

  • Super cute (little cat ears, come on 😻)

Perfect for pairing with low-traffic spots around the house.

Step 3: Choose the Right Feeding Locations

Strategic placement is everything including WHICH cat you feed first and in what order. Here’s what works for us:

Our Setup:

  • #1 Yebba: Gets fed on the living room feeding station with a slow feeding puzzle mat - If we don’t feed her first, she causes a riot!

  • #2 Seymour: Gets fed on the ground in the kitchen corner away from the other cats. Have to feed second or he will steal ground plates.

  • Callie: Gets fed on the ground in the dining room. Feed 3rd in hopes others will finish most of their food before this vaccum.

  • Mama: A senior with no appetite. We tend to mama where ever she may be and guard her like a pack of lions until she leaves her plate.

Tips for Meal Time:

  • Avoid high-traffic areas where they’ll feel rushed.

  • Separate aggressive eaters from slower ones.

  • Use baby gates or shelves for vertical feeding if needed.

Step 4: Schedule > Free-For-All

Feeding multiple cats on a schedule changes the game.

Benefits:

  • Helps prevent overeating

  • Builds routine

  • Reduces begging

  • Makes it easier to spot illness or appetite changes

We feed twice a day — and it has turned chaos into controlled anticipation (with only minimal screaming).

Step 5: Add Enrichment for Food Goblins

If you’ve got a food thief like Yebba, try enrichment tools during mealtime.

Favorites:

This slows them down and makes them work for it (revenge for the 3 AM zoomies).

✨ Bonus Tips from the STRAYZ:

  • Don’t feed in the same room unless you supervise

  • Elevate food for anxious or senior cats

  • Switch to ceramic or stainless bowls to prevent whisker fatigue

  • Stick to the same meal times (we’ll remind you anyway)
